THERE'S A STRANGER IN MY HOUSE: IMPOSTER SYNDROME

It’s so much easier to develop self doubt than to consistently big yourself up. Sometimes it feels like your inner voice is competing with another that clearly came to ruin the vibe. She’s here for the dramatics, but you’re clearly not.

Especially as creatives, we tend to wrap our self worth in our work. If our work is doing well, we are on a high. If not so good, then here comes that dingy little cloud. It’s an emotional rollercoaster. I know this feeling all too well. Imposter Syndrome is a real life troll.

Here are some ways I ground myself whenever the self doubt starts to kick in:

  • First, I remind myself to center and differentiate between my true inner voice and the negative thoughts.

  • I take some time to reset by doing the little things that bring me joy; like drawing, playing animal crossing, lighting some incense, and/or jamming to my fave playlists.

  • I practice other forms of self care by telling myself words of affirmation. I be in the mirror like Issa Rae hyping me up!

  • I also let myself go through the motions and pinpoint what’s triggering it. That way I am able to figure out the why and the solution to the why.

  • Being open with my friends and family about how I’m feeling is so important. Imposter Syndrome can feel so lonely, but friends and family are able remind you of the baddie that you know you are.

Some days all it takes, is clocking it at the door like, ummm girl no, not today! Other days it feels like a weighted task that may take days to complete. It’s loud, and it’s obnoxious. The most productive thing you can do is to be aware it’s happening, acknowledge that it’s it and not you, giving yourself the safe space to be human and go through the motions knowing you’re going to be ok.

One of the benefits of having experienced this is, we’ve already met this feeling before. So any time it resurfaces, we’re better equipped facing it using the tools that work for us!

Today, take the time to recharge and affirm yourself and let that trick know, it has nothing on you. PERIODT!
